at the Great Sphinx and the three great pyramids of the Giza
Plateau. We study the pyramids inside and out, and pay particular
attention to the Sphinx. Detailed examination of various controversial
theories surrounding these amazing structures. Optional visit
to the Solar Boat Museum. Late lunch at a Giza restaurant.
Optional after-lunch desert ride on Arab horses or camels
around and beyond the pyramids and Sphinx. Shopping for the
shoppers. Dinner on your own.
|
Day 4: Sakkara and Dahshur, Lunch
Breakfast at our hotel. Early morning
departure for magnificent Sakkara with King Zoser's Step Pyramid,
considered the first of the major pyramids. Careful exploration
of important Old Kingdom noble tombs with their vivid symbolic
reliefs and visits to other important Sakkara sites, including
the Pyramid of Unas (if re-opened) or Teti with its pristine
hieroglyphic texts and the Serapeum (if re-opened), underground
tomb of the sacred bulls. The chief themes of Egyptian sacred
science were the creation of the world, and the role of humanity
within creation. Egypt's incredibly complex mythology and
its profusion of mysterious symbols can be seen as an ingenious
method of expressing those twin interlocked themes. At Sakkara
we begin to see these themes in action.
En route to lunch we visit a local factory where children
weave beautiful tapestry carpets. Outside lunch at a picturesque,
typically Egyptian restaurant, and then a visit to the recently
opened, spectacular pyramids of Dahshur. Dinner on
your own. Try one of the excellent Giza
or Cairo restaurants.

Day 5: Fly Cairo to Luxor
Early breakfast and flight to Luxor.
Check into our five star hotel. We will have the afternoon
at leisure to shop, explore the town of Luxor or pay an optional
visit to the modern and elegant Luxor Museum.
In
the early evening we go to the floodlit Luxor Temple, the
'Temple of Man,' where R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz developed his
revolutionary 'Symbolist' interpretation of ancient Egypt
over the course of fifteen years' work at the site. In Schwaller's
Symbolist interpretation, science, art, religion and philosophy
are fused into one vast, coherent doctrine. Luxor is the temple
that best expresses that great fusion. Late dinner at our
hotel.
|
Day 6: Denderah and Abydos
After breakfast we travel by bus to
the great temple of Abydos, the best preserved temple of Egypt's
New Kingdom, consecrated to Osiris, the god -or principle-
of death and new life, of becoming and return. Also at Abydos,
we visit the mysterious and potent Oseirion, probably a relic
of that earlier civilization responsible for the Sphinx. On
our return to Luxor we stop at Dendera, consecrated to Hathor,
goddess of love, music, dance and sexuality, and Mistress
of the Cycles of Time. Optional Sound and Light show at Karnak
Temple this evening, perhaps the best of its kind anywhere.
|
Day 7: Karnak Temple
Very early visit and long morning exploration
of the vast, overwhelming temple of Karnak. Once connected
to Luxor Temple, two miles away, by a long avenue of Sphinxes
(still partially extant) Karnak is dedicated to the Powers
of Creation. Karnak is the theatre in which humanity (Luxor)
plays out its destiny. Karnak is also one of the architectural
wonders of the world.
|

Nile, Aswan is almost everybody's favorite city in Egypt. Overnight at
Movenpick Aswan.
